How to combine them

Pairings that work — and pairings that ruin a week

Portugal looks compact on a map, and it is: Lisbon to Porto takes under three hours by fast train. But the Algarve is four and a half hours from Lisbon, Madeira is a 90-minute flight, and the Douro requires a full day to be worth the journey. These combinations are tested.

CombinationDaysVerdict
Lisbon + Sintra + Cascais4Ideal first trip; no car needed
Porto + Douro Valley4Excellent; train to Pinhão, one night in the valley
Lisbon + Porto5Works well by rail; do not attempt in three days
Lisbon + Algarve6Good with a car; allow half a day each way
Porto + AlgarveanyAvoid — the transfer costs you a full day
Madeira alone6–7Best treated as a separate trip entirely
