The Atlantic is colder and stronger than the Mediterranean. Rip currents cause most incidents; if caught, swim parallel to the shore, never against the pull.

Practical beach notes

  • Sunbed hire in the Algarve costs €12–20 per pair with umbrella; many beaches also allow free space behind the paid rows.
  • Parking at popular beaches fills before 10:00 in August; several now charge €2–5 per day.
  • Nudism is legal at designated beaches (Meco, Ilha Deserta, parts of Comporta) and tolerated informally elsewhere.
  • Dogs are banned from most lifeguarded beaches between June and September.
  • Portuguese man o' war occasionally appears on the west coast after storms — heed purple flags.
  • Shade is rare on Atlantic beaches; bring an umbrella or plan around 12:00–15:00.
The best beach day in Portugal starts at 08:30, includes a two-hour lunch, and ends with you back on the sand at 17:00 when everyone else has gone.
