Cookie Policy

Used sparingly, like cinnamon. Here is the complete list, what each one does, and how to change your mind at any time.

Last updated: 12 January 2026 · Version: 2.2

1. What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store. Related technologies — local storage and session storage — do a similar job inside the browser without being sent back to the server with each request. This policy covers all of them.

We use them for three purposes only: to make the site work, to remember your consent choice, and — if you allow it — to count page views so we know which guides are worth updating.

2. Your choices

When you first arrive, a banner appears. Nothing beyond the strictly necessary items is set until you choose. You can:

  • Accept all — enables analytics and functional storage.
  • Reject non-essential — leaves only the strictly necessary items.
  • Preferences — switch analytics and functional on or off individually.

Your choice is remembered for twelve months, after which we will ask again. To change it sooner, clear this site's data in your browser and reload the page — the banner will reappear.

3. Strictly necessary

These cannot be switched off. They store no marketing data and do not identify you personally.

cookieChoiceLocal storageRecords which choice you made (all, essential only, or a custom combination)12 months

4. Analytics — optional

Set only if you allow it. We use a privacy-focused, EEA-hosted analytics service configured to truncate IP addresses and to avoid cross-site identifiers. We look at aggregate numbers, not individuals.

_lcp_statsCookie (first party)Distinguishes one visit from another so page views are not double-counted14 months
_lcp_depthSession storageMeasures how far down a guide readers scroll, to judge article lengthSession

5. Functional — optional

lcp_unitsLocal storageRemembers whether you prefer metric or imperial distances12 months
lcp_savedLocal storageKeeps the itineraries you have marked to read later, on this device only12 months
lcp_langLocal storageRemembers your language preference where translations exist12 months

6. Third parties

We run no advertising networks, no social media pixels and no cross-site trackers. Two third parties are nonetheless involved in delivering the site:

  • Google Fonts — typefaces are requested from Google's servers, which necessarily reveals your IP address and user agent to Google. No cookie is set by this request. Block third-party font loading if you would rather avoid it; the site will fall back to Georgia and Helvetica and remain fully readable.
  • Unsplash image CDN — photographs are served from an external image host, which logs the request for delivery purposes. No cookie is set.

7. Managing cookies in your browser

  1. Chrome

Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies, and "Delete browsing data" to clear existing ones.

  2. Safari

Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data, or Advanced → "Block all cookies".

  3. Firefox

Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Manage Data.

  4. Edge

Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Manage and delete cookies.

Blocking all cookies and local storage will not break the site, but the consent banner will reappear on every visit because we will have nowhere to record your answer.

If you block everything and we still seem to remember something, tell us. That would be a bug, and we would want to fix it.

8. Legal basis and rights

Strictly necessary items are set under the exemption in the ePrivacy Directive as implemented by Portuguese Law 41/2004. Analytics and functional items are set only with your consent, which you may withdraw at any time without affecting the lawfulness of earlier processing. The personal-data aspects are described in our Privacy Policy.

9. Changes

If we add or remove a cookie, this page is updated and the version number at the top changes. Where a new non-essential cookie is introduced, we re-request consent rather than assume it.
